About Us

We are a family-owned Porto Wine producer for five generations now. Today led by the fifth generation: Luísa and Maria Vieira de Sousa, but always without forgetting the teachings of António Eduardo Vieira de Sousa Borges.

Our History

In the 19th century the brand was created by our great-great-grandfather José Silvério Vieira De Sousa.

Years later after the brand's creation, due to the devastation of the vineyards by phylloxera, the company went through a period of financial instability resulting from years without production. It was at this moment that José Ermelindo, our great-grandfather found himself grappling with the difficult decision to sell the brand, in order to replant all the family's vineyards focusing again on production, aging and selling Porto Wine by the pipe.

In 2008 , with a new generation leading the company, Luísa, with the help of her father António, decided to invest, once again, in Porto Wine bottling. "Vieira de Sousa" acquired new warehouses and equipment launching the family back into the Porto Wine bottling business and, later, into Douro Wines.

Our Terroir

All our wines are produced from grapes coming from the family's five estates, which occupy almost 60 hectares in the Douro Valley. Located along the Douro river, these estates allow Vieira de Sousa to create distinctive wines with each harvest, preserving the excellence and quality that characterizes us.

The grapes used come exclusively from the family's Quintas, all located in the Cima-Corgo sub-region, recognized for its tradition and excellence in Douro wine production.

Quinta da Fonte

Quinta da Fonte is located in the village of Celeirós, at 600 meters altitude, the perfect location for producing our white grapes. From these vineyards we produce our white Douro and Porto wines, with grape varieties of Rabigato, Viosinho, Gouveio, Arinto, Malvasia and others. The vineyard is located on a small plateau, benefiting from fresh winds and altitude, producing grapes with great acidity and complexity.

Quinta da Água Alta & Quinta do Bom Dia

Quinta da Água Alta and Quinta do Bom Dia are two neighboring estates, separated only by a stream. They are located next to Ferrão railway station, between Gouvinhas and Covas. We benefit from a fantastic exposure, with vineyards facing from east to west, and in the south-facing vineyards we find the traditional varieties for Porto wine. It is with grapes from the highest and oldest vineyards that we produce our Vintage and LBV wines.

Our Wineries

The Vieira de Sousa Family has three wineries. The two oldest are located at Quinta da Fonte and Quinta da Água Alta, where our Porto wines were traditionally vinified and aged.

At Quinta da Fonte we can find the traditional granite lagares where we currently vinify the best grapes, with the objective of producing Vintage and LBV. Here we ferment the grapes using the traditional foot treading method.

In 2011 we built a new winery in Sabrosa, in the industrial zone in order to centralize a large part of production in a single space. Here too we have foot treading lagares to ferment all our Porto wines, maintaining the traditional method.

Also Quinta da Água Alta, in Gouvinhas, near Pinhão, has a small granite lagar. Although it has been unusable since 2010 due to its size, it was there that some of our most important wines were vinified, such as the LBV 2008 and Vintage 2009.
